Bugs in his eyeballs or why I will never eat again

Thanks to The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service volume 4 I am probably going to starve to death. Why? Because I have been put off from food forever… or at least until I learn how to block my mind of unpleasant memories.

You see, TKCDS is a horror manga not because it’s scary but because it does it’s best to gross the reader out. It usually attempts this through perversions of the human body: mangled corpses, bloody stumps, heads in bags, that sort of thing. All of which I can handle with ease.

What I can not handle is pulsating, wriggling snail parasites POPPING OUT OF PEOPLE’S EYEBALLS while they’re still alive. But words cannot do this page justice, you must see it for yourself.

Okay, admittedly that’s pretty funny but it still makes me puke all over myself. But that’s not the worst part, the worst part is that these mind-controlling parasites are a real phenomena. They move into snail antenna so that unsuspecting birds will swoop down and eat them, thinking them to be worms. Of course I don’t know that a human eating an infected snail would cause the parasites to pop out of the person’s eyeballs but neither do I care to find out.

I’m pretty sure I’ve lost all of my readers by now but just in case there are one or two of you still hanging on I really do recommend this manga despite, or maybe because of, the eyeball parasites. It’s about a group of university students who form the Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service which carries out the last wishes of the dead. Each character has a special skill like Karatsu who can speak with the dead by touching them or Yata who… channels a sarcastic alien through the puppet on his left hand.

The best part is not the horror or the paranormal aspects, although those are pretty good, but simply the way it’s written. The characters are constantly coming up with sarcastic quips and I’ve really come to love writer Eiji Otsuka’s dry sense of humor. Though that’s not to say that it shies away from the gruesome, which I think I’ve already demonstrated.

I hear that TKCDS isn’t selling so well for Dark Horse but hopefully they will continue to release it because now I must know – can there possibly be anything in the next volumes more disgusting than this?

And I’m ending this post with Nono because Nono is cute and doesn’t make me feel ill.

I really enjoyed the first manga, love the characters, and corpses that crawl off in the night! This reminds me why I want to buy the next volumes :)
