Genius Party 7 – Baby Blue

So far I’ve skipped Genius Party 3 and 5 because they are not yet translated and unfortunately my Japanese isn’t good enough to fully understand them. So for now this is a review of Baby Blue, the seventh and final Genius Party short. I’ve wanted to see this ever since I heard Shinichiro Watanabe was the director and it did not disappoint.

Genius Party 6 – Happy Machine Review

Masaaki Yuasa’s Happy Machine reminded me right off the bat of Kaiba, which he worked on after this. The childish art and character designs are quite similar and the story is just as surreal.

Genius Party 4 – Doorbell Review

In Doorbell a boy keeps seeing his other selves wherever he goes. This is the first time in the director’s chair for mangaka Yoji Fukuyama which isn’t all that surprising since Studio 4°C has worked with first time directors before (Michael Arias comes to mind). Although I would love to know exactly why they picked him.

Genius Party 1 and 2 – Shanghai Dragon Review

I’ve been looking forward to Genius Party for a long time now and for good reason. This anthology of 7 short films, each done by a different director, have some very prominent names attached to them, e.g. Shoji Kawamori, Shinichiro Watanabe and Masaaki Yuasa.

It’s also a Studio 4°C project which to my mind is almost always something to get excited about. After all Studio 4°C is one of the more creative studios that’s not afraid to push the boundaries of animation and do things that are outside the norm. 

Instead of trying to cram in all of Genius Party into one review I’m going to be doing a few at a time, starting of course with 1 and 2. So without further ado the first short is:
